خلاصه داستان : مردم اورشلیم تحت سلطنت هیرودیس رنج می‌برند و امیدوارند که توسط مسیح که شایعه شده است خیلی زود ظهور خواهد کرد، از دست اشغالگران رومی رهایی یابند. برخلاف برادرزاده‌اش یهودا که می‌خواهد به متعصبان (مبارزان آزادی) بپیوندد، یوسف، مرد بیوه ۳۵ ساله، علاقه‌ای به شرکت در هیچ جنگی علیه رومی‌ها ندارد.
